Intervista a Bill Green – Interview with Bill Green

Nel 1998 i fratelli Coen dirigono Il Grande Lebowski, una strana commedia che ha per protagonisti signor attori del calibro di Jeff Bridges, Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Turturro, Steve Buscemi e John Goodman. Il film diventa un vero e proprio cult con il passare del tempo, con quella sua strampalata trama fatta di bowling, Vietnam e White Russian, e negli USA nasce nel 2002 il Lebowski fest -una reunion di tutti i fan del grande Lebowski- ad opera di Will Russell e Scott Shuffitt. I due, nel 2001 daranno alla luce il libro cult (cult almeno quanto il film) “I’m a Lebowski, You’re a Lebowski: Life, “The Big Lebowski,” and What-Have-You” (link), insieme a Ben Peskoe e al grafico Bill Green, il protagonista della nostra intervista di oggi. Bill si occupa di grafica e web design e realizza tutti gli artwork e i manifesti per il Lebowski fest annuale.

– You have interviewed almost all the film actors. Could you tell us something about them? Who was more available? Who is the most exciting actor to interview?
Unfortunately I missed the John Goodman interview (the guys said he was a canon). The rest were very helpful in working out a time to talk. I remember Philip Seymour Hoffman’s voice being so powerful even though it was coming out of a tiny speaker phone. John Turturro was great. He even seemed excited to talk about the movie. But I’d have to say our conversation with Jeff Bridges was the most memorable to me. We must have been on that call for an hour. You would hear him shuffling through pages in books, then he would read aloud excerpts regarding eastern spirituality and link it to The Dude and The Big Lebowski in general. That was far out.

– Avete intervistato quasi tutti gli attori del film. Puoi dirci qualcosa di loro? Chi è stato il più disponibile?  Chi il più emozionante da intervistare?
Sfortunatamente non sono riuscito a intervistare John Goodman (gli altri ragazzi mi hanno detto che lui è davvero un personaggio). Gli altri sono stati molto gentili a trovare un po’ di tempo per parlare. Ricordo quanto fosse potente la voce di Philip Seymour Hoffman, nonostante uscisse da una debole cornetta telefonica. John Turturro è stato grande. Mi è sembrato eccitato mentre parlava del film. Ma devo ammettere che la nostra conversazione con Jeff Bridges è stata la più memorabile per me. Saremmo stati al telefono per un’ora. Lo sentivi sfogliare pagine di libri leggendo ad alta voce alcuni passi riguardanti la spiritualità orientale, che collegava al Drugo e al Grande Lebowski in generale. E’ stato bizzarro.

– You couldn’t interview Steve Buscemi and the Coen brothers, how so?
I’m not sure exactly why those interviews didn’t take place (I didn’t handle the booking and contacting of agents) but, to me, some people should be left alone to do what they do without having to grant insight into how/why they do it.

– Non siete riusciti ad intervistare Steve Buscemi e I fratelli Coen, come mai?
Non so esattamente perché queste interviste non sono state fatte (non ero io che gestivo o contattavo gli agenti) però secondo me, alcune persone dovrebbero essere lasciate per conto loro a fare quello che fanno, senza pensare troppo al come/perché lo fanno.

– Philip Seymour Hoffman was available to follow Turturro in his project on the spin-off on Jesus, are they the actors more affectionate to the film? And  what do you think about this spin-off project?
I only know what John Turturro spoke of in our interview. I haven’t heard anything about it otherwise.

– Philip Seymour Hoffman si è reso disponibile a seguire Turturro nel suo progetto di spin-off su Jesus, forse sono gli attori ad essere i più affezionati al film? Cosa ne pensi di questo spin-off?
So soltanto quello che John Turturro ha detto nella nostra intervista. Non ho sentito nient’altro in merito per ora.

– Would you prefer a big Lebowski sequel?
Absolutely not

– Preferiresti un sequel del Grande Lebowski?
Assolutamente no!

– The big Lebowski is more similar to a philosophy or a religion?
Philosophy

– Il grande Lebowski è più simile ad una filosofia o ad una religione?

– Could you list three reasons for the success of the film?
I have a hard enough time listing one. But three? That’s the $10,000 question. But I can list three reasons I love it. 1) The Dialogue 2) The Bowling 3) The Dialogue again.

– Puoi elencare tre ragioni del successo del film?
Ho trovato difficilissimo trovarne solo una, figurati tre! E’ una domanda da 10.000 dollari. Posso elencarti tre ragioni per il quale lo amo: 1) I dialoghi 2) il Bowling 3) Ancora i dialoghi.

– What film aspect strikes you most when you see it again?
How I always find something new. And it still just as funny as the last time I saw it.

– Quale aspetto del film ti colpisce ogni volta che rivedi il film?
Il fatto che ci trovo sempre cose nuove. E anche che mi fa sempre ridere ogni volta che lo vedo.

– According to your experience, people who likes the big Lebowski have in common  some aesthetic or psychological characteristic?
Not really. It takes all kinds, as they say.

– Pensi che i fan del grande Lebowski abbiano in comune tra di loro caratteristiche estetiche o psicologiche?
Non credo, il film colpisce tutti i generi di persone.

– Could you list three reasons for the success of the Lebowski fest?
It’s a costume party in a bowling alley. What more do you need for a successful event?

– Puoi dirci tre motivi che spiegano il successo del Lebowski fest?
E’ una festa in maschera in una sala da bowling. Di cos’altro hai bisogno per creare un evento di successo?

– What’s the most memorable moment happened during the Lebowski fest?

– What are your next projects and the Lebowski fest objectives?
I’m going to continue to try and come up with fresh ideas for Lebowski Fest artwork and, as far as my own projects go, I’ve been developing a series of Pop Culture related artworks I’m calling “Vectorland” which I’ll be debuting this month on my site.

– Quali sono I tuoi prossimi progetti e gli obiettivi del Lebowski Fest?
Per ora sto lavorando sempre a nuove idee per gli artworks dei Lebowski fest. Per quanto riguarda i miei progetti personali sto sviluppando una serie di art work in stile Pop che ho chiamato “Vectorland” che pubblicherò in esclusiva questo mese nel mio sito.
